Data Protection: Safe Practices against Third Party Violation
With the advancement of technology, data protection has become an important and sensitive issue for users and providers alike. Every activity and engagement online leaves behind traces of users' lives and the people connected to them, hence the importance of protecting and managing this information.
In 2013, Edward Snowden made an astonishing revelation about data surveillance practices and the infringement of user privacy by Governmental bodies and law enforcement agencies. There have also been privacy scandals against Facebook for providing users' data to big companies who then use them to target and promote their businesses. Sadly those we trust to protect our lives and privacies are the ones violating them. On the flip side, these revelations created awareness of the need for proactive steps on data protection.
Although a lot of work has been done by human rights and data protection activists in sensitizing the public on data surveillance and privacy issues, there is still work to be done. My presentation addresses privacy concerns that arises on the platforms we consume so frequently like Zoom and YouTube and the implications of using AdBlockers in our browsers as a safe encryption practice.
